Choose a workspace by the work it needs to do
Start with your agent CLI, host platform and review process. Then compare the runtime, native client and workspace features separately. A shared toolkit or a long feature list does not establish which product fits your project.

Ask six questions before installing
Write down your current workflow and the part you want to improve. A tool that solves remote attachment may not solve change review, and a native client may depend on a separate daemon.
- Which agent CLI and version must work?
- Which desktop and remote host platforms are required?
- Where do the terminals and session state live?
- How do worktrees, review and merging fit together?
- What survives closing the window or losing a connection?
- Is the product available now, and what dependencies or accounts does it require?
Distinguish runtime and client
Herdr positions itself as a durable runtime for coding agents. Herdr GPUI is a separate, unaffiliated native client for an installed Herdr daemon. Ubra uses its own Engine with a macOS workspace. Evaluate the whole installation you would run, not an artificial terminal-versus-GUI split.
Compare focused and broader workspaces
Tern presents a native developer workspace with graphical surfaces and multiple client types. Ubra concentrates on coding-agent sessions, worktrees and review. Confirm that the agent integration and platform you need are documented; a product demo is not a compatibility test.
Do not overlook terminal multiplexers
tmux and Zellij make sense if you prefer terminal session management and want to assemble Git and review tools yourself. That flexibility can be an advantage. A dedicated workspace is useful when the repeated effort of organizing agents and reviewing their changes is the problem you want to solve.
Test one ordinary task
Use a small repository, one change and a known check. Confirm the working directory, inspect the diff, and check what remains after closing the UI. Avoid choosing on synthetic launch times measured on different machines. Record the tool version, platform and limitations so you can repeat the evaluation.
Availability is part of the decision
As reviewed October 9, 2026, Ubra has no published release installers and Tern is in closed beta. If you need an installable product today, consider the options whose current releases meet your requirements. Ubra is free and Apache-2.0 licensed; your agent-provider plan remains separate.
